Many top golfers recognise the value of practising yoga to improve their game, maintain their stamina, and reduce their risk of back pain and other specific golf-related injuries. Its popularity and widespread adoption are unsurprising when you consider the health and performance benefits.
What makes yoga so beneficial for golfers?
A regular yoga practise will allow you to have:
Improved balance
when standing and swinging on varied lies
giving a solid foundation on which to swing and a good weight transfer
More flexibility and strength and increased joint mobility
especially in the spine (improved torso rotation)
a longer swing with more power
A better breathing technique
greater focus and a better swing tempo
Greater overall fitness
reducing the risk of injury and recovery time allowing golfers to play better, longer, with more confidence and enjoyment
“The most effective way to improve a golf game is to improve the quality of the body playing the sport. As players are in better control of their bodies, it becomes easier to improve the technical part of their game because now they have more movement options available.”
Craig Davies, author of Golf Anatomy (2018)
A golf-ready body
The golf swing is an integrated chain of accurate movements, with most of the joints moving through a large percentage of their maximum range of motion. It takes strength, stamina, finesse, and focus.
We all live in different bodies and every golfer’s swing is unique. Rather than trying to mimic someone else’s movements, a golfer should aim to perfect the most effective swing they can achieve. We take the same approach in yoga – we don’t expect every person’s version of a yoga pose to look the same, instead, we aim to work with our bodies to reach our potential.
“I passionately believe that yoga is for everyone. No matter your starting point
or your motivation for coming to the mat, your body, your mind and your game will benefit from Yoga for Golfers.“
